I’ve got a 1990 Virago 1100 that I’ve been riding for 10 years, but I want something less buzzy, quieter, more stable and that can sustain higher speeds comfortably. I want it to eat up miles on the interstate but also be able to tackle twisty roads with confidence. I’ve been looking hard at 2005+ FJR1300s, and might pull the trigger on one come fall or winter (when prices are best). I like that it’s shaft drive, has a big 6.6 gal tank, has lots of horsepower, wide gearing, and more importantly, infinitely adjustable windshield to tame wind noise. I’ve watched youtube videos of folks on the autobahn on these things and they look rock solid at 120-150mph, which is more than I need (I want it to comfortably sustain ~80mph, which is buzzy as hell on my Virago).
Anyone on oppo own one? Likes, dislikes? What’s maintenance like? I’ll probably be putting 3 or 4 thousand miles a year on it.

3-4 k miles? Thats it? This kind of bike will do 3-4 k miles in a week and not sweat it.
Fantastic bikes. Rode a friends 09. Not as nimble as say my SV, but torquey, smooth, and tbh SHOCKINGLY nimble for something that big. Fuel econ kind sucks though.

Is this the bike that was available with the auto-shifting gearbox?

Nah. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_FJ…
Had a 5 speed until 2016 model year, which upgraded to a 6 speed.

Thanks for the feedback. If it’s really comfortable for hours on end, I’ll probably end up putting closer to 5-10k miles per year. I have a commute that’s 50 miles each way, 100 miles a day. So if it stays reasonably sunny, I *could* rack up a couple thousand miles in a month consistently.
I looked up real-world fuel economy feedback on a few sites, and most riders are getting between 40 and 45mpg. That’s plenty for me.

I have seriously considered the FJR1300, and it ticks many boxes as far as function, but the styling is dated... Have you considered an R1200RT? They are pretty damn nice and have a better total packge in terms of little creature comforts than the FJR... They both carve well and eat up real estate on the highway.

Good bike-good choice. I have an early Concours. Ok bike. Heavier + less sporty than the FJ. Awesome fairing. Good hard bags. Depends on what your after. A closer comparison would be the FJ vs. ZRX.

FJR’s have dominated the Minnesota 1000 Rally (basically a ride as a far as you can in 24 hours collecting points) in recent years. Those are some of the best long distance riders in the region, and they all use the same bike. Coincidence? I doubt it.

I’ve heard nothing but good things from owners of them. Sounds like the right bike for what you want to do.
When I was looking at getting my GSX1250FA this spring, I figured I should at least consider a few other bikes and a used FJR was at the top of the list. I do love how the rear suspension is remotely/easily adjustable, probably the one thing I don’t like about my Bandit.
